Crystal Bowersox on defining a successful career
Crystal Bowersox just posted this in the official site: Hey Everyone, It’s so weird to read what everyone has to say on this subject. From what I’ve read, you’re all technically right, I especially liked the Madonna rant. In my opinion (as I’ve stated all along), success is all about health and happiness. Obviously in our society Money makes the world go round and exists because we believe in it. But the value of your portfolio doesn’t necessarily define success. Yes, money provides stability but in my life I’ve found, and I’m sure many others have as well, is that I’ve been happy and broke simultaneously, no matter how unstable my financial situation was. Of course, as a Mother, my priorities changed. I have more than just myself to worry about now, and so stability became a need. And that is the reason that I tried out for American Idol. I’ve always had good friends, good times, and this amazing experience that we call “Life”, and that is all I need. I hate to quote Beautiful Day, U2, (ha) but the lyric is a way of life, “What you don’t have, you don’t need it now”. You enter the world with nothing, and you leave it just the same…
I will always consider myself to be successful as long as I have my health, my son and family (family includes friends) and their health and happiness, Music in my life, The ability to speak my mind and fight the good fight, and amazing fans who support my music and care as much as you guys do. That’s it. Plain and simple.
Thank you for all of these things,
-Crystal Bowersox

This is why Crystal is a “success” no matter how her “career” unfolds. I have come to realize that money and material possessions mean very little but that true and real happiness and success is having your health and your family to love and to love you. If not certain what subject that Crystal is exactly referring to but she is so intuitive and knowledgeable about life. That is one of the reasons why her original music and lyrics are so good. I know that I have said and written this before, but when I was watching AI the night that she sang “People Get Ready” I was recovering from surgery and complications therefrom. When Crystal broke down at the end of the song and explained her reasons why, i.e., that she was just so thankful for everything in her life, I realized an instant of lucidity and clarity about life and all things therein including relationships between and among my family, my friends, people that I meet and the like. Life at that moment became “crystal-clear”.
I am so glad that we came to find Crystal; her music is outstanding, meaningful, soulful and simply wonderful. As a person she is truly selfless and caring about other people, and not merely giving lip service to those concepts, but really living her life that way. She is a rare person indeed. I cant not think of a more grounded person.
I think that she would be content simply playing her guitar and singing her songs in clubs and bars (listen to the lyrics to Gray Haired Rockstar). I really and truly look forward to the progression of her career and to listening to the music that she will write and sing. Her message is clear. She is honestly and sincerely thankful for everything she has in her life, not the material things, but for her family and friends, her health and her music, and so am I. We should all learn from her and be thankful for what we have. Thank you Crystal for being you.
At the risk of generating a good deal of ire, we probably would not know her and music if not for AI. I know I’m being selfish but that’s how the system works. Thank you Crystal for being genuine. VI21 Bruce
