No Longer a Secret
After keeping her diabetes a secret because of fear of being treated differently, Crystal Bowersox is now embracing life with type 1 diabetes. “Getting ketoacidosis and going to the hospital in [American Idol] season nine, I knew my diabetes wasn’t a secret anymore,” the singer-songwriter says.

Gaining Strength
“Once [my diabetes] was out in the open, I realized it allowed me to be more active in the diabetes community and I was no longer ashamed.” By embracing her diabetes and becoming a role model through avenues such as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International and OneTouch, Crystal says taking care of her diabetes has never been more important. “By bringing awareness to diabetes, it’s constantly on your mind and forces you to take care of yourself.”

Surround Yourself with Support
“It’s a great feeling when someone comes up to me and tells me they are going to take care of themselves because they see me taking care of myself — I’m helping make a difference for others living with diabetes,” Crystal says.

Knowledge Is Power
“I always ask, ‘Have you checked your sugar today?’ Because the more you know, the more you can do,” Crystal says. “Although every day is different, and I might not always have the control I want, I know the more knowledge I have about what is going on with my sugars, the better. I strive for good control, but I don’t beat myself up if I have an ‘off’ day.”

Keep On Singing
“After becoming ill and seeing other people with diabetes wishing me well, everything got much clearer and I realized I am blessed to have diabetes — [the diabetes community] is such an awesome support system to have,” Crystal says. “It’s so important to find communities in your area or online that you can reach out to for support to share your good moments and not-so-good moments with. I’ve even been able to reach out to the diabetes online community when my pump broke while traveling; it’s nice to know I have someone to turn to.”

Getting Involved
Inspiration through role models and support through people you surround yourself with helps good control come a little easier, Crystal says.

During American Idol (March 2, 2010), Bowersox was hospitalized because of complications from diabetes, forcing a last minute switch in scheduling to give her extra time to recuperate. Bowersox confirmed the illness on the May 19, 2010 results show during an interview with Ryan Seacrest.

Hopefully Crystal will beat the odds of being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. Type 1 diabetics and their family members have a 20% risk for developing autoimmune disease. The most common form of autoimmune disease in families with Type 1 diabetes is thyroid disease. Fifteen to twenty percent of diabetics and their siblings or parents have evidence of thyroid autoimmune disease compared to 4.5% in the general population.

Some of the autoimmune diseases that families with a Type 1 diabetic are at risk for include:

* Graves disease
* Addison’s disease
* Celiac disease

“I have a two and a half year-old son and I can’t even imagine what it would be like to be locked up for a bad decision and away from him,” she continues. “I can hardly stand to go away for a couple days when I have a show. So, I really fed on that emotion and drawing from my own motherhood.”

Bowersox says she tried to do some acting in high school, but “was always in too much trouble for the extracurricular stuff.” Yet, regardless of her lack of formal training, she left a good impression with the series’ star.

“Her first acting gig ever and she was great. That girl is a natural,” Dana Delany tells THR about Bowersox. “And after we finished shooting the scene, she brought her guitar out and played for everybody, which is so cool.”

In fact, it seems that music wasn’t far from her mind and the experience of acting may have helped her branch out a bit with her own songs.

“I did start writing a tune in the hotel room in Rhode Island when we filmed it,” Bowersox says.

“Most of my songs are from my own perspective,” she goes on to say. “Storytelling is another world of songwriting that I’ll get into in the future.”

Bowersox released her debut album, Farmer’s Daughter, in December 2010. It has sold more than 205,000 copies.

Body of Proof airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on ABC.

“Zoey’s a bad-a** chick. She’s made a few mistakes. She’s a young mother as well,” says Crystal. “I’m a bad-a** at heart, but I would never do those things because I’m a mom. But Zoey is incarcerated, she can’t see her daughter, it stresses her relationship with her mom. There were lots of aspects of Zoey’s character I could empathize with and relate to, so it was a good role.”

We can’t wait to see her acting debut, which Crystal says is something she’s always wanted to try. But don’t worry – Crystal isn’t abandoning her music to be the next big TV star.

“It’s more of a branch off a tree,” says Bowersox. “I went to a performing arts high school, but I focused mostly on music, but drama is something I’ve always wanted to do. I just never actively pursued it.”

“I’ve got a list of material for the next album and I’ll be recording over the wintertime,” Crystal continues. “I’m hoping for a spring, maybe summer release.”

“She’s a bad girl with a good heart, kind of like me,” says Bowersox, laughing. “I’m more of a good girl now with a good heart, but I used to be [like Zoe], though I don’t know what it’s like to be incarcerated at all. I know nothing about it. My juvenile record is sealed so it’s all good.”

All kidding aside, though, Bowesox says she did draw from real life — specifically, her close relationship with her son — to help her prepare for her role. “Zoe was incarcerated for drug dealing, and she’s on some kind of work-release program [where she gets to see] her young daughter,” Bowersox explains. “I could not imagine what it would be like to be locked up for a bad decision and not be able to see my child. I can hardly go a weekend playing a show without missing him like crazy, so I drew my inspiration from the things I could find in common with the character.”

While the Idol runner-up attended a performing-arts high school, she admits her acting résumé was a little sparse before Body of Proof producers contacted her about auditioning. “I was really insecure about it. I’d never done anything like this before,” says Bowersox, who remembers getting “a really great piece of advice about acting” from Lynch in between takes. “He said, ‘As long as you’re telling the truth, you have nothing to worry about.’ And I kind of thought on that for a minute, about telling the truth from someone else’s perspective,” Bowersox explains. “Acting isn’t necessarily pretending. It’s storytelling. It’s giving someone your perspective on something.”

That said, “I felt pretty guilty when I was being interrogated,” she adds with a laugh.

Still, are there parallels between her Body of Proof gig and her day job? “You have to learn to draw the same emotion you had when you wrote a song every time you perform it,” Bowersox says. “Acting is the same way: You have to find those emotions and bring them to the surface, and then put them back when you’re done.”

In addition to “learning a lot” from Delany and Lynch, Bowersox notes there were other perks from her time on set. “I got to see so much behind-the-scenes stuff,” she recalls. “It wasn’t like working with the makeup artists on Idol. There were pictures on the wall of the trailer with all the gory makeup and horror-film stuff that the artists had done before, and I was just infatuated with it.”

With her acting debut imminent, Bowersox says she’s well aware of the doors Idol has opened for her. “[Body of Proof] was a great opportunity for me,” she says. “There are actors who wait in lines for auditions and callbacks and screen tests, and I walked right on and screen-tested and they liked it. I’m very lucky for that.”
